About the I Ching

Discover the ancient Chinese system of divination and philosophy that has guided seekers for over 3,000 years

The Book of Changes

The I Ching (易經), also known as the Book of Changes, is one of the oldest Chinese classical texts. Dating back over 3,000 years, it serves as both an oracle for divination and a book of wisdom containing profound philosophical insights about the nature of change and transformation.

At its core, the I Ching teaches that change is the fundamental principle of existence. Everything in the universe is in constant flux, moving between states of yin (receptive, feminine) and yang (active, masculine) energy. By understanding these patterns, we can navigate life's challenges with greater wisdom and harmony.

Yin and Yang

━━ ━━
Yin (陰)

Receptive, feminine, dark, passive, earth, moon, winter

━━━━━━
Yang (陽)

Active, masculine, light, creative, heaven, sun, summer

These complementary forces represent the fundamental duality in nature. All phenomena arise from their interaction and transformation.

Trigrams

Eight trigrams (bagua 八卦) form the building blocks of hexagrams. Each trigram consists of three lines and represents fundamental forces of nature:

  • ☰ Qian - Heaven/Creative
  • ☷ Kun - Earth/Receptive
  • ☳ Zhen - Thunder/Arousing
  • ☵ Kan - Water/Abysmal
  • ☶ Gen - Mountain/Still
  • ☴ Xun - Wind/Gentle
  • ☲ Li - Fire/Clinging
  • ☱ Dui - Lake/Joyous

The 64 Hexagrams

Hexagrams are six-line symbols formed by combining two trigrams. The 64 possible combinations represent all possible life situations and their inherent dynamics.

Structure of a Hexagram:
  • Upper Trigram: Represents the external situation, heaven, or future
  • Lower Trigram: Represents the internal situation, earth, or present
  • Lines: Read from bottom to top, numbered 1-6
  • Moving Lines: Lines that change, creating transformation
Traditional Components:
  • Judgment (彖): Overall meaning and advice
  • Image (象): Symbolic description and guidance
  • Line Texts: Specific meanings for each line position
Example: Hexagram 1

乾 - The Creative
Upper: Heaven ☰
Lower: Heaven ☰

Traditional Divination

Ancient Methods:

Yarrow Stalk Method: The original method using 50 yarrow stalks in a complex counting process.

Coin Method: A simpler approach using three coins, tossed six times to build the hexagram from bottom to top.

Our Digital Approach:

Our application simulates the traditional coin method, where three coins are tossed for each line:

  • 6 points (3 tails) = Old Yin ⚋ (changing line)
  • 7 points (2 tails, 1 head) = Young Yang ⚊
  • 8 points (1 tail, 2 heads) = Young Yin ⚋
  • 9 points (3 heads) = Old Yang ⚊ (changing line)

Philosophical Foundations

Change as Constant

The I Ching teaches that change is the only constant in the universe. By understanding the patterns of change, we can flow with life rather than resist it.

Balance and Harmony

True wisdom comes from finding balance between opposing forces. The interplay of yin and yang creates harmony in all aspects of life.

Timing and Action

The I Ching emphasizes the importance of right timing and appropriate action. Knowing when to act and when to wait is essential wisdom.

"The I Ching does not offer itself with proofs and results; it does not vaunt itself, nor is it easy to approach. Like a part of nature, it waits until it is discovered."

Carl Jung
